The Westside hub of the Kauai Police Department has relocated.
The Waimea substation has been relocated to the West Kauai Technology Center at 9565 Kaumuly Hwy. From previous Ola Road location, used by KPD since 2013.
According to the department, the new substation is not yet fully operational and has no internet or telephone.
The delay in infrastructure is due to the financing process as the KPD did not expect the lease of Ola Road to be renewed. The department had no budget for rising expenses this fiscal year, which totaled about $4,100.
Kauai County Councilor Felica Cowden, chair of the Committee on Public Safety and Human Services, is monitoring the situation and said funding for ground communications is available after meeting with KPD officials on Thursday.
“I am committed to working with KPD leadership to ensure that West Kauai is well represented and that KPD Substation gets the funding they need,” Cowden said on Thursday.
The department officially left at the end of October, but it is unclear to what extent the department has been warned about the lease’s termination.
Despite the lack of infrastructure, employees can perform all their duties, Koko Zikos, a KPD public information officer, said this week. All officers have their own equipment with full internet access. The substation supports a clerk, lieutenant, squad leader and two officers per shift, and covers the areas from Hanapepe to Kekaha and Koke.
The new West Kauai Technology Center lease is for five years.
There is no estimate at the moment when the substation will be fully operational.
